Creating Your First Custom Navigation Menu

Menus are an essential part of any web design or blog as it serves to visitors as a navigation system to access content.

Menus consist combination of pages, categories, custom post types and custom links in-group or separately.

WordPress provides facility of creating different menus and menu structure. Using the menu editor you can create multiple menus and then assign them to specific menu locations on your website.

In your WordPress admin area, go to appearance and select menus.

Now,  you can easily edit menu screen. On the left you have pages, links and categories. The categories. The categories will also display your custom post types.

Creating a Custom Navigation Menu in WordPress

Below are the steps for creating a new menu in WordPress.

  1. Click Appearance >> Menus.
  2. Make sure that you are on the Edit Menus tab.
  3. Click the “create a new menu” link.
  4. Give the menu a name, and click the Create Menu button.
  5. Under Menu Settings you can assign this menu to any of the locations defined by the theme. Pick one of the locations.
  6. Here you can also decide to “Automatically add new top-level pages to this menu” but I think we are trying to customize things here so leave that box empty.
  7. Now, from the left side you can choose menu items to add to the Menu Structure area. (see below for more information)
  8. After adding menu items, be sure to click the Save Menu button or else they won’t “take.”
  9. Visit (and refresh) the homepage of your WordPress site to see the menu in action.
